The atmosphere of Mars is the layer of gases surrounding Mars.It is primarily composed of carbon dioxide (95.32%), molecular nitrogen (2.6%) and argon (1.9%). It also contains trace levels of water vapor, oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and other noble gases. Most interesting to non-specialists may be the climate history, which suggests Mars once resembled Earth with a thick atmosphere, abundant precipitation and ground water, and possibly an ocean. For this reason, early Mars was presumably friendlier to possible life than the frigid, desiccated surface - with atmospheric pressure less than 1 percent of Earth's - that we see now. As for the rest of Mars' atmosphere, it was likely blown off under the assault of solar wind.
Erosion of the Martian atmosphere by the solar wind – article
The Martian polar caps, minerals, and soil could all provide sources of carbon dioxide and water to thicken the atmosphere. Ionized Metal in Mars' Atmosphere After Comet Flyby. This graphic depicts what Mars' atmosphere would have looked like to a viewer with ultraviolet-seeing eyes after a meteor shower on Oct. 19, 2014. It combines an image from the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph on NASA's MAVEN spacecraft with an illustration of how the atmosphere lies over Mars.

"During the first four minutes into descent, we use friction with the atmosphere to slow us down considerably," says Naderi. "However, at the end of this phase, we're still traveling at 1,600 kilometers per hour (1,000 miles per hour), but now we have only 100 seconds left and are at the altitude that a commercial airliner typically flies. Mars is the only inner solar system planet with an observed hydrological cycle and by inference, the potential for life.

Kuiper ascertained from telescopic observations in 1947 that the Martian atmosphere is composed mainly of carbon dioxide. The atmosphere is very thin, exerting less than 1 percent of Earth’s atmospheric pressure at the surface. Surface pressures range over a factor of 15 because of the large altitude variations in Mars’s 2017-03-09 · “The resulting enhancement in the atmosphere of this CO2, a greenhouse gas, will begin the process of melting the water that is trapped in the northern polar cap of Mars. It has been estimated that nearly 1/7th of the ancient ocean of Mars is trapped in the frozen polar cap. Mars may once again become a more Earth-like habitable environment. 2018-07-30 · One of the challenges of terraforming Mars is to increase its atmospheric pressure, which is currently less than 1% that of Earth. The Martian polar caps, minerals, and soil could all provide sources of carbon dioxide and water to thicken the atmosphere.
